Configuring AVG Upon completing the install of AVG, you will need to click the "Check for Updates" button several times until the program has downloaded all the updates to itself, and you may also need to restart your system. When you're finished you should now see a multi-colored square icon in your system tray (lower right). Right clicking on that icon, choose "Launch AVG Control Center"
When the Control Center comes up, the right-hand window will contain 7 blocks, (you may have to scroll to see the last one). Click first on the "Email Scanner" block. When that window comes up, see that you are on the "Plug-ins" tab up top, and that you can see the "Configure" button.
Click the "Configure" button. When the next window comes up, make sure the "Check Incoming Mail" and the "Check Outgoing Mail" checkboxes are BOTH checked, and you may UNcheck both the "Certify Mail" boxes if you like. All these boxes do is to allow AVG to attach their advertising to every email you send or receive.
Now you can "OK" your way back to the Control Center, then click "Test Center". When the Test Center comes up, click on the "Scheduler" button on the left. That brings up the window below where you will choose what time of day (or night) you want AVG to check for a new virus definition file and run a system scan. Select the "UpdatePlan" first, since you would want it to update itself before it does a scan. You can either double-click it or use the "Edit schedule" button at the bottom. Either way, set the time to update, then set the time to run a system test after it. Personally, I set the update time as 2AM and the test time as 4AM.
And that's it. You can "OK" your way out of everything, and AVG will automatically update itself and run a full system test every day. If you're anal retentive about this stuff, (like me), you can right-click on the AVG icon, select the "Test Center", and click on the "Test Results" button on the left every few days for a while. It will show you when AVG last ran and if it found any viruses or not.
